The UNCORK-ED Gala was a spectacular success on many levels, and we want to express our heartfelt thanks to all those who helped make it so. Our event sponsors (Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, Synopsys, and Symantec), table sponsors (17 Oregon companies), in-kind sponsors (7), auction item donors, committee and night of event volunteers – and of course the SAO and SAOF staff – you all made it happen!
Our audience of almost 300 enjoyed a night of tasting fine wines from 12 area wineries and a sumptuous array of fine food from Jake’s Grill. They responded with enthusiastic bidding for the many superb silent and oral auction items, and the new “grab bag” and wine pull were both sold out. At the end of the night, the SAOF saw over 150% increase in net proceeds to the organization over UNCORK-ED 2005!
Just as important, the SAOF succeeded this year in getting its pro-education message across on a much larger scale than ever before. Designed to focus attention on the SAOF’s philanthropic mission to “awaken a passion for technology among Oregon students,” UNCORK-ED 2006 raised the visibility of some outstanding teachers and students. Keynote speaker Susan Castillo, Oregon’s State Superintendent of Public Instruction, emphasized the importance of technology in K-12 curriculums and of partnering with industry to achieve it. She then presented the Technology Teacher of the Year award to Steve Viaene of Tigard High School.
The theme of the night – “Dream Field Trips” was symbolic of the SAOF’s focus on helping to inspire students, but also literal in that two all-expenses-paid VIP field trips to Microsoft’s Redmond campus were awarded – one to the highest bidder and one to a deserving student (Jason Messer of Sunset High School) who was selected through a statewide competitive process. The trips include exclusive meetings with the XBOX and Education Products development teams, which offer a truly unique opportunity to gain special insights and once-in-a-lifetime educational experiences.
Again, thanks for helping SAOF improve its ability to make contributions to society through education. Stay tuned as we work to do it again in 2007!
Please join the UNCORK-ED Event Committee, SAO Foundation Board, and SAO staff in a “virtual round of applause” for the many people who contributed their efforts and resources to make UNCORK-ED 2006 an unqualified success!
